CHAPTER EIGHT
2006
By the time the call finally came through, Scott had begun to think the Major had forgotten all about it.
It had been almost nine months since he and Dutch Schaefer had spoken at Morenoâs stronghold, and for the majority of that time Scott had been on tenterhooks. He had just reached the stage where his first waking thought each morning had not been to wonder if today might be the day, when he received a message to say that Captain Starkey wanted to see him.
Major Dutch Schaefer was the last thing on Scottâs mind when he knocked on Starkeyâs door. He assumed the Captain simply wanted to share the latest intel or discuss another potential mission with him. He was surprised, therefore, when, after being invited to sit down, Starkey said, âYouâll be having a visitor tomorrow, Sergeant.â
âWill I, sir?â said Scott. âWho?â
âA Major Alan Schaefer has asked to speak with you. I believe the two of you are acquainted?â
âOur paths have crossed on a couple of missions, sir, but I wouldnât really say I know the Major.â
âHmm.â Starkey was a hawk-faced man with no discernible sense of humor. âSo you have no idea what this meeting might be about?â
âHave you not been briefed about it, sir?â
âI have not.â The Captain was clearly not happy about the fact.
Scott briefly considered divulging the details of the last conversation he had had with Schaefer, then immediately rejected the idea. Not only did Captain Starkey have no sense of humor, he also had no imagination.
âIâm sure it wonât be anything to worry about, sir,â Scott said smoothly. âWhenever Iâve encountered Major Schaefer, procedures have been followed to the letter.â
âI have no doubt about that, Sergeant,â Starkey said, then hesitated. Finally, he muttered, âYou will do me the courtesy of letting me know if youâre planning to move on from us, though, wonât you?â
Scott raised his eyebrows in surprise. âI have no plans on that score, sir.â
Starkeyâs expression remained unchanged. âPerhaps not. But youâre a fine soldier, Sergeant. I would hate to lose you.â
âThatâs not going to happen, sir,â Scott said, touched by his superiorâs comment.
Starkey leaned back in his chair and crossed his hands in front of him, his idea of a relaxing pose. âWell, all right, Sergeant. Be here at eleven hundred hours tomorrow. You and Major Schaefer can use my office.â
âYes, sir. Thank you, sir,â Scott said.
